GM Recalls 668,000 SUVs Over Defective Child Seat Anchors

2023 GMC Terrain in red.General Motors has issued a recall for more than 668,000 midsize SUVs because they may have LATCH child seat anchor points too thick to properly attach a child safety seat. The recall affects Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain SUVs from model years 2020-2023.

In documents filed with National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the company explains, “One or more of the four rear seat lower child seat LATCH anchorage bars may have been finished with excessive powder coating.”

Until dealers have inspected vehicles, GM is asking parents to install child seats using the vehicle’s seatbelts instead — an alternative procedure detailed in the cars’ owners’ manuals — if they cannot install the seat with the LATCH anchors.

The company is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to the problem, which employees discovered in an inspection.

Dealers will fix the problem by inspecting the anchors and, if necessary, removing and replacing the powder coat finish. As with all recall-related repairs, the fix is free.

Manufacturers recall many cars to fix safety defects, sometimes more than once. While automakers try to reach every owner to ask them to bring the vehicle in for repair, they rarely reach them all. Millions of vehicles on American roads need free recall repairs. Check the easy VIN tool at our recall center to find out if your car is one of them.
