Alfa Romeo Tonale Gets 33-Mile All-Electric Range

The 2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale in profileThe Alfa Romeo Tonale is one of the most intriguing new cars of 2024.

Italy’s Alfa Romeo has struggled to gain a foothold in the American mind despite building some beautiful, fun-to-drive cars. Critics say the Giulia sports sedan and Stelvio midsize SUV are underrated. Still, most months, they sell at just a fraction of the speed of similar cars from Germany’s luxury automakers.

Alfa Romeo dealers routinely have the largest stockpile of unsold cars among luxury brands.

Enter the Tonale. A sporty-looking compact SUV with an available plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain, it has the potential to bring a lot of shoppers into Alfa Romeo dealerships.

This week, the car took a big step toward becoming a great option for many. The EPA has released fuel economy measurements.

In PHEV form, the Tonale is good for 29 mpg in combined driving. That’s a respectable figure. Better yet, it can manage up to 33 miles on electric power alone. Alfa Romeo North American boss Larry Dominique says the figure “will allow many of our customers to drive their daily commutes without tapping the fuel tank.”

With 285 horsepower, the Tonale PHEV should balance fun and practicality nicely.

A more affordable, non-hybrid edition will arrive later.

Alfa Romeo parent company Stellantis also owns Dodge. The Tonale shares many parts with the 2023 Dodge Hornet.
