The 2023 Volkswagen Atlas and its sportier-looking Atlas Cross Sport sibling are known for lots of interior space and intuitive, user-friendly technologies. But our test drivers have found that underwhelming engines hold them back.
Volkswagen seems to have been listening. Both midsize SUVs are due for a refresh. For the 2024 model year, it arrives with a new engine and refreshed cabin designs.
Today, the base engine for both models is a 235-horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder model that struggles with the weight of such a big vehicle. Buyers can step up to a 276-horsepower V6 better equipped for the task at hand. But it adds to the price.
For 2024, VW will offer just one engine – but one more capable of the job. The new mill is a 2.0-liter turbocharged model making 269 horsepower. Both Atlas models will continue to offer front-wheel drive with the option of all-wheel drive.
Other updates include a lovely updated dashboard that pulls the 12-inch touchscreen higher (so you don’t have to look down from the road to see it) and cants it slightly toward the driver.
The base model gains a heated steering wheel with paddle shifters, heated and ventilated front seats, and a height-adjustable passenger seat. Other trims remain largely unchanged, but there is a new Peak Edition light off-roader model with all-terrain tires and underbody protection.

Volkswagen also charges a mandatory $1,350 delivery fee on all its SUVs.
